Essay On Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird - 2101 Words
Discrimination can be defined as a ââ¬Å"prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatmentâ⬠(Discrimination. Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 30 Dec. 2017.). Discrimination and prejudice make justice difficult to achieve, allowing inequality to ensue. In the film To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Robert Mulligan and in the film A Time to Kill, directed by Joel Schumacher, this issue is obvious. Both films take place in the Southern United States at a time when racism was at its peak. In the first film (To Kill a Mockingbird), a young girl named Scout witnesses chaos in her town when a black man is accused of raping a low-class white girl. The story unfolds around this manââ¬â¢s trial and the impact it has on the entire town.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When the mans attorney Atticus says Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I dont pretend to understand, heââ¬â¢s revealing how strange he t hinks it is that people saw black people as dangerous and untrustworthy. In A Time to Kill, the main message in the film is that if you put yourself in someone elseââ¬â¢s shoes and try to see things through their eyes, youââ¬â¢ll treat them more fairly. Jake Brigance, the main character in the film as well as lawyer to the convicted black man proves this message when giving the summation for his client in saying Can you see her? Her raped, beaten, broken body soaked in their urine, soaked in their semen, soaked in her blood, left to die. Can you see her? I want you to picture that little girl. Now imagine shes white. This speech allows the jury to put themselves in the shoes of the defendant, which made for a more fair verdict. Jake was very right in saying Its not me, were not the same, Carl Lee. The jury has to identify with the defendant. They see you, they see a yard worker; they see me, they see an attorney. I live in town; you live in the hill. and because of this reasoning, he reached his goal of making the jury feel empathy for his client. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many techniques used to deepen the understanding of the film and make it more interesting for the viewer.Show MoreRelatedRacial Discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird Essays636 Words à |à 3 PagesTo kill a mockingbird is an extremely powerful book highlighting the horrors of racial discrimination in the ââ¬Å"Deep Southâ⬠of the United States of America. The Fall of the Roman Republic free essay sample
ââ¬Å"The die is castâ⬠Julius Caesar The expansion of Rome, the ruling of Julius Caesar and his death, and the civil war that followed his death all led to the collapse of the Roman Republic. The expansion of Rome created political, social, and economical changes. Politically, the government did not change to suit the expanding of Rome. The economic changes were that poor farmers could not afford anymore to compete with the estates run by slaves, so they sold their land to the rich. Most became urban poor, which meant they were homeless and jobless, and that the government gave them food. Social changes were that the expansion widened the gap between the rich and the poor. This gap caused tensions between the two classes, and led to the fall of the republic. Julius Caesar came to power after he spent four years campaigning in Asia minor. He was elected Senator at age 40. C, when him, Pompey, and Crassus formed the first triumvirate, which basically puts him as consul. In 58 B. C, he left Rome and headed to Gaul, which there, he would become governer. Returning to Rome, and still on consul, Julius Caesar started illegally creating laws. In 56 B. C, Pompey and Crassus were to be consuls again, and Caesars command in Gaul was extended until 49 BC. In 54 B. C, Caesar led a three-month expedition to Britain, and was the was the first Roman to cross the English Channel, but he did not establish a permanent base there. When he got back, he found news that Julia, the daughter of Julius Caesar and the wife of Pompey, had died in childbirth, which weakened the relationship of Julius and Pompey. In the following year, Crassus received command of the armies of the East, but was defeated and killed by the Parthians. At age 54, Julius Caesar was named dictator for ten years. He was elected out of mostly fear and respect by the Senate. Julius created a calender with 365 days, and named the month of July after himself. He also planned to attack the Parthians. In 44 B. C, Julius was elected dictator for life. The Senate agreed that Julius was acting as king, and plotted to assainate him. On March 15, 44 B. C, Julius Caesar was assaninated by the Senate, led by Pompey. In the arising chaos of Caesarââ¬â¢s death, Mark Antony, Octavion, and others fought a series of five civil wars, which would end in the formation of the Roman Empire. The Roman middle and lower classes, with whom Caesar was popular, became angry that a small group of aristocrats had killed Caesar, especially after Antony gave a dramatic applause that appealed to the common people, a reflection of public opinion following Caesars murder. About 43 B. C, the second triumvirate was formed between Octavion, Mark Antony, and Lepidus. Sometime after 43 B. C, Afterward, Mark Antony married Caesars lover, Cleopatra, intending to use the fabulously wealthy Egypt as a base to dominate Rome. A third civil war broke out between Octavion and Antony. This final civil war resulted in the final ascendancy of Octavian, who became the first Roman emperor, under the name Caesar Augustus, a name that raised him to status of an idol. The fall of the Roman Republic was caused by the expansion of Rome, and itââ¬â¢s class tension, the ruling of Julius Caesar, and all things that followed Julius Caesarââ¬â¢s death.

Mc Donalds Business Report Essays - Food And Drink, Fast Food
Mc Donalds Business Report McDonald's INTRODUCTION: McDonald's Corporation is the world's leading food service organization. The corporation started out as a small drive-through in 1948 by two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald. Raymond Albert Kroc, a salesman, saw a great opportunity in this market and advised Dick and Mac to expand their operation and open new restaurants. In 1961 Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers. By 1967 McDonalds expanded its operations to countries outside the U.S.A. This unyielding expansion led the Corporation to open 23,000 McDonald's restaurants in 110 countries in 1994, producing $3.4 bn in annual revenues. In addition, McDonald's opens a new restaurant every three hours. Also, McDonald's has twice the market share of its closest U.S. competitor, Burger King, representing 7% of total U.S. eating-out sales. Similarly, McDonald's serves about 1% of the world's population on any given day through its 23,000 restaurants internationally. Big Mac, the world's most sold hamburger was developed by Jim Delligutti in 1967 to feed construction workers. 'Big Mac' is the biggest attraction and backbone of the corporation. CUSTOMERS: Customers are those who pay money to acquire an organization's goods or services. For many years McDonald's mostly targeted the young people, however this has changed in this decade; McDonald's has turned towards a more general market. By doing this McDonald's concentrates on the family, targeting a diverse market which includes consumers ranging from children to elderly people, using products such as the happy Meal for children and Egg McMuffin for the elderly. McDonald's also realized the changing world we live in and the need for healthier food, since there is an ever changing demographic group, who demand fast, top quality food that is low in calories. McDonald's responded to this opportunity and introduced a new and innovative product. This new product was a regular hamburger that tasted like the real thing but was made of plant material like Soya beans. This same product also targets another demographic group, vegetarians. McDonald's mostly uses psychographic segmentation targeting the working and middle classes. These are the people that are more susceptible to enter a fast food restaurant, since these are the people that lead a fast moving life and thus require a fast meal. Smoking Bans in US
Smoking is a widespread habit that causes many diseases. The issue of whether to ban smoking indoors by the governments of various countries is popular as they try to take a step towards curbing the harmful effects of smoking. People support smoking bans because they understand the harmful effects.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Smoking Bans in US specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Some governments have put in place partial smoking bans, and others have passed total smoking bans. This literature review will focus on the whether the United States government should pass a nationwide indoor smoking ban. The difference between partial and total smoking bans. Moreover, smoking at workplaces. Wye, Bowman, Wiggers, Baker, Knight, Carr, et al (2010) says in Australia smoking is the leading cause of disease burden. The rate of smoking is very high among patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, and many of th em succumb to smoking related illnesses than their counterparts without the disorders. Total smoking ban is better than partial smoking ban because it protects non smokers from the effects of secondary smoke. The smokers find that they have to cut down the number of cigarettes they smoke in a day as long as they are in total ban smoking areas. The total smoking ban may encourage them to give up the habit. Whereas, partial smoking ban may paint the picture that smoking is fine as long as one does so in a designated area. Yet, the harmful effects continue to undermine their health. For instance, in a mental health facility that practices total smoking ban treatments for nicotine dependence are high unlike in those that have partial bans. For total smoking ban to be successful all the stakeholders in a health institution or in a country need to be included in the strategy. The inclusion of people in implementing the total smoking ban will lead to acceptance and compliance. If the stake holders are not included some will be hostile to the smoking ban, and it might not be successful. However, there is limitation in findings of prior researches on staffsââ¬â¢ view on the issue of total smoking bans in mental health institutions.Advertising Looking for research paper on social sciences? Studies show that many people prefer if employees did not smoke at their workplaces. Many workplaces have implemented a total smoking ban. Many employees are okay with the ban because they do not like their smoking colleagues exposing them to secondary smoke. Moreover, employees waste time during working hours as they take a break to go. and smoke. The breaks affect their productivity hence they do not give their best to their employers. Thus, there is a negative attitude towards workers smoking in their work places. Therefore, one will not see many people smoking at the workplaces openly because of the negative attitude, but will see them smoking outside for instance in parks, bus or rail stops, and home. On the other hand, we have the partial smoking bans. Some governments have passed partial smoking bans to cut down on the cost of smoking both in social, and health terms. The introduction of the bans is not old and many countries such as the United States have taken a step to look into the effects of secondary smoke to people. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention was given the responsibility of studying the effects of secondhand smoke. The findings showed that the number of people suffering from heart attacks decreased. However, there is still no concrete evidence to support that short time exposure to secondary smoke leads to an increase in suffering from cardiovascular diseases. Secondhand smoke has been shown to cause problems to individuals a round the smoker and hence partial bans do not protect the people in the same environment as the smoker. For instance, some hotels and bars have smoking areas, but people near those areas are still exposed to the harmful effects of the secondary smoke. Some studies have been done to examine if partial smoking bans are effective than total smoking bans, and the pros and cons of each (Hofmann Nell, 2012). However, there is no conclusive study about which type of ban is better, but the bottom line is that smoking bans improve the welfare of the society.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Smoking Bans in US specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In conclusion, the United States government should pass a nationwide indoors smoking ban because the harmful effects of smoking cannot be underestimated. The number of people suffering from smoke related diseases is high thus an indoor smoking ban can help to reduce the num bers. Moreover, many people seem to be in agreement that smoking indoors, and exposing the other people to secondary smoke is not good. Hence many would support the indoors smoking ban. The government needs to make a concerted effort to enforce laws against indoor smoking to protect its citizens from the negative effects of smoking, and ease the burden on the health sector. More importantly, the government should bring all the stakeholders on board so that they can support the indoor smoking ban, and avoid law suits by those who feel that the ban may be infringing on their personal freedoms. Besides, the population should be sensitized about the harmful effects of firsthand and secondhand smoke so that they can embrace the smoking bans and in the process deter those who are considering taking up the habit, and encourage those who smoke to quit.
